Kasabangla: A Rural Digital Drama Revolution by Ajaruddin and Team In the dormant backwaters of the Karimganj district of Assam, the land of tradition, the digital revolution still eludes the vision and the grassroots media initiative is emerging. It is an initiative named as Kasabangla and it is not only a YouTube channel but it is also a movement that unites the rural youth of the country with technology and the art of performing arts.
YouTube is now the biggest content platform in the world where one can now exhibit their talent even in the most remote corners of the nation. Although it is common to find urban creators who normally dominate these digital platforms, Kasabangla is not one of them. It is a struggle that brings the local life, problems and culture into dramas, and that too with bare minimal resources.
Kasabangla channel did not emerge out of a corporate studio, but it was conceived by two friends, Azharuddin and Monir, who are firm believers in the power of storytelling and potential of their people.

Kasabangla's Beginnings

Kasabangla: Ajaruddin & Monir’s Creative YouTube Theater from Rural Assam
When the smartphones started penetrating into the villages of India in 2019, Azaruddin and Monir Uddin realized a new opportunity. They observed that the residents of their area consumed a lot of content on Youtube, but they could not find stories about their language and culture. They chose to do something about that. Kasabangla: A Rural Digital Drama Revolution by Ajaruddin and Team
They made their first play using a simple smartphone and their interest in theatre and uploaded it on YouTube. It contained the local youngsters, a common dialect and had themes that resonated with the locals, such as family relations, village gossiping, festivals and moral tales.
The reaction was cool at first, but gradually the videos began to become viral. Remarks began to flow in even in the local districts. The common people liked the fact that it was simple and had emotional appeal. They called it the channel Kasabangla as the excitement gathered momentum and the name became the symbol of desi Bengali content.

Founders - Azaruddin and Monir Uddin

The channel is headed by Azaruddin who has a long history in community theatre and can be taken to be the director and the creative head of the channel. He was a self-trained artist who used to always arrange cultural programmes on such festivals as Eid, Puja and Independence Day.
His close friend and co-founder is Monir Uddin who is skillful in organisation and videography. He is not a person who appears on the camera, but he is the one who records, edits and uploads, and also inspires the group to make a timely release.
Kasabangla is anchored on their collaboration. Playing off of each other, both strengths, Azaruddin is the creative and Munir the technical pillar
