Normal delivery public awareness message Dr Nadia Sultana

A new awareness message by Dr. Nadia Sultana, a respected healthcare professional from Sylhet, is gaining attention on social media for highlighting critical safety measures related to normal delivery and maternal care.

Dr. Sultana, who works at Seba Diagnostic & Consultations Centre, used her platform to raise awareness among expectant mothers and families about the importance of institutional delivery and timely medical support. Her post aims to correct long-standing misconceptions surrounding childbirth, particularly those related to the placenta (গর্ভফুল) and excessive bleeding.

Misconceptions About Normal Delivery

In her message, Dr. Sultana explained that many people still believe that maternal deaths occur because “the placenta rises toward the chest,” which is medically impossible.
She clarified that such deaths often result from delayed expulsion of the placenta or uncontrolled bleeding after childbirth — conditions that require immediate medical attention.

She added that in earlier times, when most deliveries occurred at home, many mothers lost their lives because the placenta was not removed within the proper timeframe. The delay led to heavy bleeding and life-threatening complications.

Dr. Sultana emphasized that the placenta naturally expels itself within 30 minutes after delivery. Within one minute of childbirth, the mother should receive a prescribed injection to help the process.
There is no need for unscientific actions such as pressing the abdomen, inducing vomiting, or inserting hair or fingers into the mouth — practices that are unsafe and unnecessary.

If the placenta does not come out within 30 minutes, the mother must be taken immediately to the nearest clinic or hospital for professional medical intervention. Delay can cause the uterus to close, leading to severe hemorrhage or even shock

Institutional Delivery Encouraged

Dr. Sultana urged people to avoid home delivery whenever possible and to seek institutional or hospital-based delivery instead. She reminded that government hospitals in Bangladesh provide such services free or at minimal cost, ensuring better safety for both mother and child.

“Please don’t make decisions based on traditional sayings. Think of your health first. People will only give advice, but in danger, no one will come forward — be alert, be aware,”
— Dr. Nadia Sultana said in her message.
