Assam CM Facilitates Tribal Students’ Visit to Tata Semiconductor Plant, Empowering Future Tech Leaders

Tata Semiconductor Project in Assam: Gateway to India’s Chip Future

Tata Semiconductor Project in Assam
CM sends 50 tribal students on Tata Semiconductor plant in  tour, promoting inclusive tech training under India’s $10B chip mission As part of a groundbreaking skills initiative, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma oversaw the visit of 50 tribal students to the upcoming ₹27,000 Cr Tata Semiconductor facility in assam in Morigaon. This move aims to integrate underrepresented youth into India’s fast-growing semiconductor ecosystem, offering real-world exposure and training to shape them into future-ready professionals.

Skill & Employment Impact

Inclusive approach to workforce development is also one of the peculiarities of the project. Tata Group in partnership with the state government and NSDC developed a fabrication and characterization semiconductor training program- aimed at tribal, rural, and first generation learners.
The significant training highlights are as follows:
6-month rigorous program
More than 200 hours of practical lab training
90 percent of the students are the first-generation tech learners
94 percent placement in electronic businesses
Post-training Internships and industry certification
This initiative has come to national focus recently when 50 tribal students of Assam were taken on exposure visit to the Tata plant. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted,
Unlocking possibilities- 50 students of tribal communities were provided with a tour of the Tata Semiconductor Facility in the pipeline… Opportunities are there to be enjoyed by everybody!

Major Projects Underway in Assam (2024–2026)

Such a wide developmental vision, of which the TSAT factory is a part, was initiated during the tenure of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma. The state is in the process of implementing a few mega-projects:
Name
TSAT Semiconductor projects Plant Jagiroad 27,000 Cr Under construction
High-Speed Brahmaputra Bridge (Bhuragaon-Kaupati) NH-715A 3,706 Cr Proposed
Ratan Tata Electronics Manufacturing City Morigaon 8000 Cr Planning Phase
New Medical Colleges (8 districts) Statewide 4000 Cr and above 3 current, 5 on way
Guwahati Super-Speciality Hospital Guwahati 2000 Cr Laid foundation
11 New 5 Star Hotels Urban Assam 500 Cr++ MoUs signed
Jorhat-Jhanji 4-Lane Highway Jorhat 738 Cr 97% complete

Completed Projects Since 2021

Assam has experienced massive development of infrastructure since CM Sarma assumed power:
Completion of several medical colleges in Barpeta, Kokrajhar and Nalbari
The Maligaon flyover at Guwahati is largest in North-East India
State corridor and Bharat Mala highway expansions
The 23 districts drinking water projects
Community Kitchens Project to serve the poor students (1 lakh+ beneficiaries)

Future Vision: Assam’s Development Roadmap
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has presented a grandiose strategy to a $100B state economy in 2030. Some of the future projects are:
AI and MEMS R&D Center (in cooperation with IIT Guwahati)
Women-Focused Technology Training Centers (90 percent female enrolment)
Power Transmission Overhaul Plan of 12,000 Cr
North Bank, Karbi Anglong Agro-Tech Zones
Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment Summit- 22,900 Cr MoUs with foreign players signed
Sugar Infrastructure Mission in North Assam
Energy Security Projects together with ONGC and NEEPCO
Economic & Social Impact
The GDP growth rate of Assam should be raised by 1.2 per cent by means of semiconductor and allied industries
Creation of jobs: TSAT alone will create 15,000 direct and 11,000 indirect jobs
The 150+ ancillary industries supported
Tourism upsurge: 11 luxury hotels to be built under PPP

CM Sarma’s Vision: Security & Growth

More recently, CM Sarma also requested the assistance of insurgent groups like ULFA-I not to disrupt the peace by saying:
Large investors such as Tata Group are investing in Assam at last. This upheaval will reach our 14 lakh unemployed youth. Peace should not be broken.”
Assam is becoming a force to reckon with in the future of India which depends heavily on technology and the Tata Semiconductor Plant is its crown jewel. Digital infrastructure and green energy, medical innovation and global investment outreach are among the areas where the state is acting quickly and strategically.
This development model demonstrates that there is nothing like inclusive growth as a slogan in Assam, inclusive growth is a reality which is being constructed chip by chip.

Which semiconductor company is coming to Assam?

The Tata Group is setting up a ₹27,000 crore semiconductor assembly and testing facility in Jagiroad, Morigaon district, Assam. This project, named Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test (TSAT), marks the state’s first major investment in the semiconductor manufacturing sector

Tata selected Assam for its semiconductor facility due to the state’s political stability, infrastructure readiness, abundant land availability, and strong government support under CM Himanta Biswa Sarma. Assam’s strategic location in the Northeast also aligns with Tata’s goal of decentralizing India’s chip manufacturing network

The Tata Semiconductor Plant in Assam is expected to create 15,000+ jobs, boost the state’s GDP by 1.2%, and make Assam a critical part of India’s $10 billion semiconductor mission. It also provides training and employment for tribal and rural youth through government-supported programs.

The first phase of the Tata Semiconductor facility in Assam is expected to be operational by mid-2025, with full production capacity (48 million chips/day) projected by 2026.

The current CEO and Managing Director of Tata Electronics is Dr Randhir Thakur, who took on the role in April 2023. With over 40 years of experience in the global semiconductor industry—including leadership positions at Intel Foundry Services, Applied Materials, SanDisk, STEAG, and Micron—he brings a wealth of expertise to the company

Under a state-supported skill development initiative, 50 tribal students were recently taken on an exposure visit to the Tata Semiconductor plant. They are undergoing a 6-month training program in semiconductor fabrication and chip testing, making them industry-ready for future jobs in electronics manufacturing.
