Dr Hifzur R Siddique AMU ALIGARH, August 2 a cancer researcher at the Department of Zoology, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), has achieved a historic milestone by contributing as an expert member in drafting the world’s first international guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of NUT carcinoma, a rare and aggressive cancer.

The guidelines have been published in The Innovation, a prestigious Cell Press partner journal, which recorded a five-year impact factor of 40 and an impact factor of 25.7 in 2024. Notably, Dr. Siddique was earlier included in the world’s first Expert Consensus Group on NUT Carcinoma, published in Tumor Discovery.

Only Indian Scientist Among 175 Global Experts

Dr. Siddique stands out as the only Indian scientist among 175 experts worldwide, representing countries such as the USA, UK, China, Italy, Israel, Sweden, Portugal, Spain, Poland, Brazil, Norway, Greece, Austria, Singapore, and Japan. Their collective research has resulted in globally accepted cancer treatment guidelines, which are now publicly available on ScienceDirect.

Urgent Need for Standardized Global Guidelines

Highlighting the importance of this breakthrough, Dr. Siddique emphasized that despite the rising incidence of NUT carcinoma, there were no unified, evidence-based strategies for its diagnosis and treatment. “To bridge this gap, researchers from 90 institutions—including universities, pharmaceutical companies, and hospitals—collaborated to establish these standardized recommendations,” he explained. This initiative marks a turning point in cancer research and treatment, ensuring consistency and accuracy in managing the disease across the world

About NUT Carcinoma and Dr. Siddique’s Achievements

First identified in 1991, NUT carcinoma is an exceptionally rare and aggressive malignancy characterized by NUTM1 gene rearrangement. With a median survival of just 6–9 months, only 20–30% of patients survive beyond two years, making global guidelines essential for better patient outcomes. Beyond this contribution, Dr. Siddique has also been recently honored with the Editor of Distinction Award 2025 by Springer Nature. A noted cancer biologist, he has authored 132 research papers, holding a cumulative impact factor of 700 with an average of 6.7.
